Celebration Day for the Mid-Autumn Festival

Activity goal:

~Learn about the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival
~Learn about the traditional customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival
~allow students to enjoy the atmosphere of the Mid-Autumn Festival while playing with lanterns and making mooncakes

Introduction:

Through learning about the traditional Chinese festival, students understand the origin and customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Through the story “Chang’e Flying to the Moon”, students can understand the allusion to the Mid-Autumn Festival. The opportunity of making lanterns allows students to display their unlimited creativity, and children can also experience the fun of making lanterns. On the celebration day, children pretended to be Houyi to shoot down the sun, made moon cakes and participated in lantern party activities. They also tasted moon cakes during snack time and enjoyed celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Chinese Shadow Puppet Show

Activity goal:

~Learn about the relationship between the “Light” and “Shadow”
~Learn about the Chinese Shadow Puppetry

Introduction:

This activity allows students to learn about the relationship between the “light and shadow” and through learning about the Chinese Shadow Puppetry. Shadow puppetry is a performance in which actors control the shadow puppets and use lights to perform stories.

The activity provides the opportunity for students to manipulate the shadow puppets, and realize that the shadow puppets have simple joints and is difficult to perform complex movements. In addition, students can observe the shadow puppets’ detailed carvings, complex and changeable facial makeup and headdresses from the activities to express the characters’ identities, thoughts and feelings.

Visit the Hong Kong Heritage Museum

Activity goal:

~Learn about the Cantonese Opera: Theatre in a Bamboo Shed

Introduction:

Visiting the Hong Kong Heritage Museum allows students to understand the cultural meanings of theatre in a bamboo shed. This kind of theatre has a history of more than 100 years in Hong Kong. It can be seen in various districts during traditional festivals. It is a temporary mobile performance venue built with bamboo and wood. In addition to providing entertainment to the public, for the older generation, the theatre in a bamboo shed is also an amazing memory that accompanied them as they grew up.

The Art Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Culture

Activity goal:

~Allow students to explore and understand the “History”, “Places”, “National Customs” and “Culture” of China
~Give opportunities for students to appreciate others’ creations and artworks
~To enhance students’ self-confidence

Introduction:

Through the Project Approach learning activities, students could explore different Chinese cultures. In the eyes of children, there are different interpretations of Chinese culture, including games and toys, food, art, and national customs. The preparation of “The Art Exhibition of Traditional Chinese Culture”, allows students to present their expressions of Chinese culture. Also, all students successfully showed their creativity and artwork to all the guests! We are so grateful to see their enthusiasm and smiles during the whole learning journey!

Celebration Day for Dragon Boat Festival

Activity goal:

~Learn about the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival
~Learn about the traditional customs of the Dragon Boat Festival
~allow students to enjoy the atmosphere of the dragon boat racing

Introduction:

Through learning about the traditional Chinese festival, students understand the origin and customs of the Dragon Boat Festival. Through the animation, students learn more about one of the greatest poets, Qu Yuan’s story and history. Also, students can learn how to make dragon boats and rice dumplings. During the activity day, dragon boat races were held with the students, which created an unforgettable experience for all students. At the same time, to commemorate the great patriotic poet Qu Yuan, the activities of “throwing rice dumplings” and “carrying rice dumplings” also allowed students to experience the traditional activity: throwing dumplings into the Miluo River of Dragon Boat Festival.

Lunar New Year Fair

Activity goal:

~Learn about the ” National Customs “, “Culture” and “Filial Piety” of Chinese traditions
~Enjoy participating in the Lunar New Year Fair

Introduction:

Through learning about the Lunar New Year, students understand the meanings of “National Customs”, “Culture” and “Filial Piety” from this traditional Chinese festival. Cultivate students from an early age to understand that ” Filial Piety ” is a Chinese tradition, which lets them learn to respect their parents, elders and ancestors. In addition, teachers and students write “Fai Chun” together, so that students can experience the fun of writing Chinese calligraphy.
During the Lunar New Year Fair, the students engaged in buying and selling activities. Elder students from the senior classes took care of the students from the junior classes and enjoyed participating in the Lunar New Year Fair together.
